Do Athletic Mouth Guards Cause Health Concerns?
Reproduced in part from an article in the LA Times
I recently read an article in the LA Times about athletic mouth guards. Being a former high school athletic director I know the importance of protecting ones mouth area. An athletic mouth guard not only protects the teeth, but the soft tissue around the mouth area that teeth can damage.
Athletic mouth guards also can pick up unwanted germs and bacteria. Athletic mouth guards need to be kept clean and sterile. To many times, these are left sitting in dressing rooms and practice facilities.
Researchers believe that athletic mouth guards are important for mouth and teeth protection. However, they also feel that any mouth guard that starts having a jagged edge or is chewed up should be thrown away. New athletic mouth guards should be used more occasionally.
Those that are kept should be sanitized on a daily basis to fight disease and bacteria. The athlete can easily do this at home after games or practice.
